Hi Everyone,
Yesterday, 22nd January, Lesmahagow Curling Club held our annual South Lanarkshire Rosebowl competition.
Our club secretaries worked very hard on our behalf and managed to find curlers to fill 5 of the 6 sheets of ice. I'd like to say a big " thank you" to John and Merle and to the members who supported the competition.
Unfortunately, on the day, we were 2 people short. Fortunately, Lindsay Haggart had her shoes with her and filled one of the vacancies but that still left us with one rink playing with 3 lady curlers and none of them are currently playing above 2nd our club competitions . Sorry ladies......if we'd known before the competition was underway, we would have rearranged things but there are sometimes good reasons why people aren't able to attend.
So, I hope those 3 ladies Merle Tough, Janet Drife and Betty Lambie are at home enjoying the Galaxy chocolate presented to them by Davie. He reckoned the shots these ladies gave to others reflected that they were on another planet! I'd prefer to say that they launched themselves into the competition, reached for the moon and were stars for smiling their way through and making the best of a difficult situation.
That's enough on the Galaxy connection!
The winning rink included Iain Callan, Alan Turner, Jimmy Anderson and, our last minute sub, Lindsay Haggart.
Lindsay led the team by playing 2 great shots in the 2 ends my team played against her and I'm assuming that she was doing well in the other games too. That set the standard of play for the men to follow. They didn't let her down and I believe the winning score was +13 shots.
I'm thinking that Lindsay's going to enjoy telling everyone that she was the Haggart who was in that winning rink. Dad was only in the picture because he was presenting the trophy.
Watch out David and Gillian! Think I'm right in saying she's only 10 years old.
I've been told that Gillian will be enjoying the wine and Lindsay will receive a more appropriate prize in exchange.
On a personal note, I'd like to say that it was lovely to have Lindsay stepping in at the last minute and I've heard, from Gillian, that Emily Head is following in the steps of her mum and gran and is curling very well on a Saturday morning too. There may be other young curlers related to Lesmahagow members out there that I don't know about, so if there are youngsters that would like to make up the numbers in future fun bonspiels, let me know and we'll keep them in mind.
Rona
